Leslie D. Bessellieu, Ph.D.
Dr. Leslie Bessellieu began her career working in the Counseling and Self-Development Center at South Carolina State University, where she later returned as Assistant Professor of Psychology. Prior to teaching there, she was employed at the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health in Horry and Georgetown counties, providing psychological services to children, adolescents, and adults. She obtained her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Auburn University in Auburn, AL and her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
Dr. Bessellieu previously maintained her own private practice in Columbia, South Carolina where she also taught a number of undergraduate psychology courses at the University of South Carolina and served as adjunct instructor for Columbia College.
She has provided her clinical expertise to diverse populations, which included serving as a contract psychologist at Shaw Air Force Base, supervising psychologist for the Midlands Evaluation Center of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and chief psychologist at the SC Department of Probation, Pardon, & Parole, where she streamlined the psychological assessment aspect of the pre-employment screening process and developed a Fitness for Duty policy for the agency.
Dr. Leslie is a certified personal and executive coach, who founded her own consulting and leadership development company, providing executive coaching and other services to business leaders and owners, executive directors, CEOs and senior leadership staff of small and mid-size companies. She provides full and half-day development sessions to businesses. Some of the most requested trainings include: The Challenge of Leadership in Sustaining Change, Maximize Your Leadership by Strengthening Resilience, Leading with Excellence through Emotional Intelligence, and 7 Steps to a BETTER You.
Leslie serves on the Strategic Advisory Panel of the American Psychological Association’s Psychology in the Workplace Network and was previously Chairperson of the South Carolina Psychological Association’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award Program.
Leslie firmly believes that God has allowed her to use her profession as a means of ministering to others, whether it’s through counseling, coaching, or informal conversations. She is passionate about helping others lead more fulfilling lives by integrating their spiritual values into their work and day-to-day living. Although she was born in Brooklyn, NY and spent her formative years in the Bronx, Leslie is a “Carolina Girl” at heart, and enjoys spending time with family and friends in Pawley's Island and Columbia. She is an avid reader, loves to sing, and will forever cherish the beautiful sunsets she was blessed to witness each night that she lived in the Virgin Islands.
